For the first competition out of State this year, Russel travelled to Canberra to take part in the open section of the Athletics ACT U20 & Open Championships Competition.
With the ACT Athletics Championships attracting some of the best track and field athletes from all over the ACT, and Australia, it was a good opportunity to compete in the men’s 200m in the seniors open event against some good competitors.
Fortunately despite potential storm conditions forecast for the region for the weekend, conditions were perhaps as good as might be expected on Sunday the 30th with no lightning or rain, but some blustery winds to contend with and all events proceeded.
In the men’s 200m open event Russel came through the heats without issues and first with a time 21.22 into a -1.4 headwind securing a berth in the A final.
For the final it was second place with a time of 21.24 into a similar – 1.5 headwind pipped to first by a familiar competitor fellow Queenslander Connor Diffey clocking 20.98.
